"The tallgrass prairie is home to a wide variety of native plants whose roots extend deep into the soil and are a vital part of this extensive ecosystem. These deep roots bind together those connected to the Flint Hills. The farmers, ranchers, Indigenous People, and animals living in this breathtaking landscape depend on this unique area of land. The leadplant, Kansas gayfeather, and compass plant are wildflowers that contribute to the health of the Flint Hills. Their roots grow to 14 feet and help sustain this important ecosystem.
