Description
[Classics] Ovid; [George Sandys] Ovid's Metamorphosis Englished, Mythologiz'd and Represented in Figures. An Essay to the Translation of Virgil's Aeneis. John Lichfield, London, 1632. Folio, (x) (viii) 549 (1) pp., errata at end and pp. 532 to 549 being being the first book of Virgil's 'Aenid', recently rebound (by R. Carlton Seitz) in half brown niger with marbled boards, vellum tips, raised bands, gilt spine lettering, red sprinkled edges, sewn in headbands, all in excellent condition. Original bookplate of Philip Fitz Roy (1837-1892) inside upper cover along with recent bookplate of R. Carlton Seitz, old bill of sale by R. Atkinson London bookseller dated 11 June 1932 tipped in along with early catalog listing, Engraved frontis and title page, both cleaned and fully backed with tissue guard, each of the fifteen books of the Metamorphosis with full page engraving all by Salomon Savery after drawings by F. Clein, margin notes and commentary following each chapter. STC (2nd ed.), 18966; Madan, I, p. 163; Sabin, 76458. English edition of Ovid's Metamorphosis with Copperplate frontis, extra title and 15 full page copper plate engravings all by Salmon Savory. after drawings by C.F. Clein. This copy has the same E3 miss labeled 'F3'. Plates nice, clean with some cockling of the text near the beginning, some age toning to text, few pages with small stain at outer, top edge around page 530, final leaf with 3/4" paper repair along outer edge and another small repair below erreta not affecting text, some old water staining evident at lower edge and corner of the text toward the end of the volume, not affecting text and not very noticeable.

Terms And Conditions Bidder agrees that the terms listed shall govern this auction and that he/she agrees with them. Buyer's premium is 23% for weekly auctions or 27% for Catalog, Waverly & Collector's series Auctions. An additional 4% premium is added when paying with a credit card or debit card. Purchases must be removed by noon Saturday following the auction. 1A. Full payment: All items must be paid for in full before the bidder leaves the premises. Nothing may be removed until bidder transaction is settled. Payment for purchases must be made by cash, cashier's check, or credit card (Visa or Master Card only) or by personal check or business check if approved by auctioneers. Auctioneers reserve the right to hold personal or business checks for up to 10 business days to allow for clearance of funds, returned checks are subject to an additional fee of $35.00.
